Box Office Breakdown – Can Eclipse End Up on Top?
We all know ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ is going to be big as far as box office numbers are concerned. Currently, the movie is generating 82% of the daily sales on Fandango.com and is to date the highest advance ticket seller the site has had all year.
But, what kind of records/previous box office numbers will Eclipse have to beat out?
We already know ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ was one of 2009’s top earners with a box office total of $296.6 million, however its opening day total was record breaking, the film brought in $72.7 million on its opening day, $27 million of that was just from midnight showing. ‘New Moon’s opening weekend was also massive with $142.8 for all 3 days. ‘Eclipse’ has a slight advantage with that its opening on 1) a Wednesday 2) a holiday weekend (4th of July), the film also doesn’t have much in the way of competition, the only other film opening this weekend is ‘The Last Airbender’.
There are other records to break, Last summer ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ nabbed the top spot for an Opening Day – Wednesday with $62 million. Back in 2008 ‘The Dark Knight’ grossed $203.7 million during its 5 day opening and so far no one has topped that. The highest ‘4th of July’ weekend gross goes to ‘Spider Man 2’ with $88.1 million.
What does all this mean for ‘Eclipse’ in order to beat all those records listed above, ‘Eclipse’ will need to generate at least $203.8 million this weekend. Now, the chances are slightly greater due to the film having a limited release in IMAX, which does have its higher ticket prices.
Twilight Fans are known to see the movie during repeat viewings over opening weekend, so hopefully with the holiday weekend, IMAX viewings, and the multiple viewing I know Twilight fans are sure to do, there is a good chance ‘Eclipse’ could be the biggest earner during this rather bleak “Blockbuster” summer.
Variety Reviews Eclipse
This the second positive review I’ve read today for ‘Eclipse’.
This one comes via Variety!!
It goes without saying that the faithful will devour “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” the third movie in Stephenie Meyer’s immensely popular supernatural love-triangle saga, and also the one in which Bella must finally choose between her two beastly suitors. The pleasant surprise this time around is that the result finally feels more like the blockbuster this top-earning franchise deserves. Employing a bigger budget, better effects and an edgier director (“Hard Candy’s” David Slade), “Eclipse” focuses on what works — the stars — even as the series’ parent-friendly abstinence message begins to unravel. Summer release should reap Summit’s biggest yield yet.
Taking a cue from the “Harry Potter” series, which maintains continuity on the writing and casting fronts while introducing a different feel with each change of director, the “Twilight” producers have embraced a variety of different visions behind the camera. Capitalizing on her indie sensibility and keenly observed teen insights, Catherine Hardwicke set the tone with the low-budget first film, with Chris Weitz expanding (and flattening) the world with his broader, daytime soap-opera style in “New Moon.” Now, the task falls to Slade, who clearly understands how to work with actors while also demonstrating a welcome competence in the action and melodrama departments.
It’s no easy task taking a piece of material auds already know inside-out and spinning it in such a way that individual scenes still generate tension and suspense. Slade sets us on edge from the outset with an atmospheric vignette merely alluded to in the book, as small-town boy Riley (Xavier Samuel) is ambushed and bitten by an unseen vampire in shadowy Seattle (looking every bit as ominous as Tim Burton’s Gotham City).

As we are know (and are very jealous of ) 4 Twilight Fansites were invited to a lunch with Stephenie Meyer.
The sites (Twilight Series Theories, Twilight Source, Twifans, and Letters to Twilight) have recently come back from this lunch with answers to all our questions.
However, they are not permitted to post their interviews till AFTER ‘Eclipse’ comes out next week!!
That being said, today they were able to post Stephenie’s answer(s) about Midnight Sun.
Since i agree with TwiFans and just reading the answer does not do it justice, you can click on the below links to listen to Stephenie herself give the answer!!
